Volunteering Report Update

It’s been my first year in post and I am really enjoying the job. It’s great to see how many people out there are willing to give up their time to volunteer and how many different volunteering opportunities there are. I’ve built up some good working relations over the year with the volunteer placement providers and it’s always nice to know how well the volunteers are doing and what a difference they are making not only to themselves but to the organisations to whom they are giving up their time.

Volunteer Recruitment has been very busy over the last twelve months. This is due to all of you out there who are willing to give up some time to volunteer to either help out in their local community or further afield. We’ve had people walking through the door (in all weathers), picking up the phone, e-mailing and sending letters to get involved in volunteering. We’ve also had a very good response again from students who’ve found time in their busy student life to give up their lunchtimes and free periods to help out at their local primary schools. Thank you all for your help, time and commitment which is very much appreciated.

Over the year, I have worked closely with Beauchamp College and Guthlaxton College promoting and organising volunteering for the students. There has been a very good response from both colleges and many of these students have chosen to volunteer with the local primary schools on the Right to Read and Number Partners Scheme. The schools have been really appreciative of all the help given by these student volunteers and it’s made a real difference to the children who have had the benefit of these student volunteers either sit and listen to them read or to play numeracy games with.

We also have good links with South Leicestershire College who I have worked with throughout the year placing students on various courses into temporary volunteer placements. This has enabled them to get an insight into the sort of work they would eventually like to get into and has been very much appreciated both by the volunteer placement provider and by the student volunteers themselves.

I have also been involved in working with Leicestershire Constabulary to source volunteer placements for their student officers. As a part of their training, the student officers have had to undertake a Foundation Degree at De Montfort University. One of the First Year Degree Modules is dedicated to Diversity and Community Engagement and this has involved undertaking a volunteering placement within a community setting over a 12 week period at one day per week. The placements have provided them with an opportunity to work with different client groups. Some of the organisations I have placed them with are Age Concern, Mosaic and Aigburth Care Home. As these volunteer placements have worked out so well, the placement organisations have been willing to take on further batches of students as well.

We have continued to promote volunteering at every opportunity and have worked closely with providers to advertise a variety of volunteering placements to potential volunteers. However, we are always looking for more opportunities so if you are in need of a new volunteer we will do our best to fill your vacancy.

I have attended various events and road shows over the year to promote volunteering such as recruitment road shows at Beauchamp College and Guthlaxton College in June, the Young at Heart Day in September, the Carers Forum in December and South Leicestershire College in February. We have displays in Wigston Library and Oadby and Wigston Council offices foyer to promote volunteering.

We organised a Thank You Party in June for all our volunteers. This was held in the form of a Race Night and was enjoyed by all of those who attended. We also held a MacMillan Coffee Morning in December to which we invited all our volunteers and raised £164.00.

If you have a few hours to spare and would like to get involved in volunteering, please get in touch.

I would like to thank all the volunteers for all their volunteering over the last year.
