Walking for Health
Why don't you Walk?
Over the 2 year period that the scheme ran we organised 12 walks ranging from areas in Lutterworth to Braunstone and Countesthorpe to Oadby. Two of these walks, Anand and Parivar, cater for the older members of the Asian communities and were set up with the help of Nisha Popat at Age Concern.
As at June 2005, when funding for the Walking for Health Co-ordinator ceased, there were 90 people trained as walk leaders under the Walking for Health Initiative. 58 of those being in South Leicestershire.
First aid training has also been given to all trained leaders.
Judith North from South Leicestershire PCT has also qualified as a walk leader trainer and this means that we are able to train our own leaders in-house, making the walks sustainable for the future.
There have been many useful partnerships established, included in these are South Leicestershire PCT, Blaby District Council, The Countryside Agency, Midlands Co-operative Society Community Section, Oadby & Wigston Borough Council and the staff and rangers at Brocks Hill Environment Centre.
As the funding for a Walking for Health Co-ordinator has ceased, Voluntary Action will continue to co-ordinate quarterly meetings for groups and partners to allow sharing of information, co-ordination and support.
