Carers Development
A carer is someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a friend, relative or neighbour who couldn't manage otherwise because of frailty, illness or disability.
Sarah Lambrianou is the Carers Development Worker.
Karen Smith is the Assistant Carers Development Worker.
The Carers Project
Caring for one another person is often rewarding and fulfilling experience, however it can also be extremely demanding. You can become emotionally and physically drained making it increasingly difficult to cope. The government strives to keep those affected by ill health or disability in their own homes and so your role as a carer is a very important one.
Did you know that?
- There are 6 million carers throughout the uk!
- 3 Million carers work part time and provide over 50 hours of care each week!
- Women are more likely to have a caring role than men. However male carers make-up 42% and they are often working too!
- Those carers who provide 50 hours of care or above per week are themselves likely to become ill!
Help us to help you
The Carers’ Project wants to reach as many carers as possible with information, support and opportunities to meet together, and one another and with health and social care professionals.
If you are a working carer we would like to hear from you how best we can support you.
If you consider yourself as being from an ethnic minority and are a carer, please let us know if you need more help due to language or cultural differences.
Dates For Your Diary
COFFEE MORNING AT THE LIBRARY

Along with Wigston Library we have arranged a coffee morning so that Vinod can show people around the library. This is a continuation of the talks that Vinod gave to the three Carers groups, although anyone who did not attend is also welcome. The library has so much more to offer these days and this will be a good chance to have a look around and also enjoy a chat and a coffee. Date 27th March 2008, 10.30-12.00pm.

CARERS KEEPING FIT IN OADBY & WIGSTON
In conjunction with the County Council Sports Development Workers, Voluntary Action Oadby & Wigston Carers' Project have devised an annual programme of leisure activity taster sessions. The first session to kick off these events is a Tai Chi session at Brocks Hill Environment centre, Washbrook Lane in Oadby. The session is just for Carers and will start at 9.30 -10.30am with a qualified instructer. The aim of the sessions is to encourage Carers to value the importance of their own well being as well as enjoying a little time out in a relaxing environment. It is also a good opportunity to try different types of leisure activities without committing oneself to a full programme. We ask that Carers contribute a small amount of £2 to cover go towards the overall costs of each of the sessions. The next activity will be a Yoga class to be held at the Scouts Den in Central Avenue in Wigston on the 23rd April 2008, from 6.00-8.00pm. So grab a pair of trainers and we look forward to you coming and joining us. Details can be found in the March newsletter or a full programme of the years events can be obtained by contacting Sarah on 0116 2810026.
CARERS COOKING COMPETITION
Carers’ Cook Off
Are you any good at cooking? For Carers’ week in June we have organised a meal out with a difference. We are inviting you to send in recipes for simple wholesome home cooked meals. The cook at the Manor Farm Shop in Catthorpe will select the best two and these will be on the menu on the day of our meal out. Those who attend the meal on the day will then be asked to vote on which recipe they preferred and the winner will receive a prize. The meal will take place on Wednesday 11th June 2008 and further details of the times will be advertised nearer the time. In the meantime we ask that you send recipes as soon as possible and before May 1st. Any questions; call Sarah on 2810026.
